I know that there are many of you readers that are searching for, no, CRAVING for some new music to ingest into your ear holes. I believe I have found just the band to satisfy these desires. Hailing from Los Angeles, CA is Incipience, an instrumental progressive metal outfit ready to take the scene by storm. Their most recent, and first, EP release “Bloom” is a quick but very fulfilling adventure of the senses. If you are at all a fan of progressive music (especially Animals As Leaders), you will 100% love this release.

Highlights of the EP for me include the title track “Bloom”. Right from the get go the band displays their technical prowess. There is then a nice interplay of some low end chugging and delicious melodic riffing, which is present throughout the entire album. This song also has a great break in the middle where the group shows off some atmospheric playing. The band does a great job in changing the moods within songs seamlessly. Another favorite was the song “Proliferate”. The beginning of this song sounds like something right out of Chon’s playbook, which is definitely a good thing. Then the tone changes and it starts sounding very heavy and melodic, like something from Intervals. My only problem with the EP was that I wish there were more songs. I also think it would be very interesting to see what the addition of vocals could do with these songs.

This EP “Bloom” is one that isn’t afraid to exhibit its influences. In a sea of other progressive, djenty metal bands, Incipience has done a very good job in standing out with this release. As talented as these players are, there are a ridiculous amount of talented musicians that play music similar to this. What makes these set of songs special is the attention to songwriting, and ability to convey very different expressions and feelings throughout the music. Although it does help when you have a guitarist that mastered the Tosin Abasi “thump’ guitar technique on the song “Cycle”. If you’re in the area, make sure to check out their first show in Los Angeles supporting Inanimate Existence on their Unseen Self Tour on June 28th. And be on the lookout for future releases from this young three piece progressive powerhouse.
